Four new tracks from Justice — four movements of a piece called Planisphère — have been posted to the duo’s Myspace page and leaked as high-quality MP3s. An earlier version of Planisphère premiered this summer as a piece produced for the Dior Homme Spring/Summer 2009 fashion show.

The word Planisphère exists in French and English. It’s broadest meaning is “the projection of a sphere (or part thereof) onto a plane.” In cartography, it refers to a map like the one above.

In astronomy, perhaps only in English, the word usually specifically “refers to a simple device which consists of a pair of concentric discs, one of which has part of the celestial sphere projected onto it, the other of which has a window representing the horizon. Scales about the perimeters of the discs allow it to be set to show the sky at specific times and dates, enabling its use as a simple and convenient aid to location of objects.” Wikipedia says “The astrolabe is a predecessor of the modern planisphere. That instrument was known to the ancient Greeks.”
