Video: Little Boots performs “New In Town”
The Bowery Ballroom was pumping with electro-pop sounds on Wednesday night as it played host to synth-pop queen Little Boots and supporting band Yes Giantess.
Yes Giantess took the stage after the earlier warm up act of French pop outfit Plastiscines, whose performance amounted to a poor man’s Ting Tings. With the show already running behind schedule, Yes Giantess quickly got their equipment set up and were ready to dance. At first glance, this Boston foursome appear like they could be playing a gig at their frat house party. Nevertheless, they are making quite a name for themselves in the electro-pop world and this performance proved why.

Yes Giantess have somehow been compared with both New Kids on the Block and MGMT, however, their sound is even more positive and upbeat, which was useful considering they were facing a crowd who were becoming increasingly antsy due to the delays in the schedule. Their dance sound and lively songs, which are designed to make an audience bop along, worked a treat on this crowd. The entire band displayed amazing energy throughout the set with frontman Jan Rosenfeld jumping up and down on stage, synchronized with the entire band’s head nodding and dance movements, showing their enthusiasm for performance.
They offered lots of energy but very little interaction with the crowd, however, this could possibly have been due to time constraints. There can be no doubt that they put their all into this show and they warmed up this crowd nicely – only to have them cool down again as we waited – and waited – for Little Boots to arrive.
Hopes were raised as her Tenori-On was placed on the stage, only to have us wait some more. (To dispel any weird images, it’s an electronic instrument which looks not unlike an Etch-a-Sketch.) It was later revealed that she played a surprise set at Perez Hilton’s party at Irving Plaza, which caused her to run late for her appointment at the Bowery Ballroom.

By the time Little Boots appeared on stage, the crowd was growing weary. She finally appeared in a blaze of green glitter to the strains of “Meddle,” during which she put her Tenori–On to good use. The crowd took a little while to warm up considering the downtime between the end of Yes Giantess and her taking the stage, but by the time she got into her performance of “Earthquake,” all was forgiven as the venue came to life once again.

The highlight of the evening was her performance of her latest hit, “Remedy,” which was sang en masse by the crowd, who were by now in full swing. This was clearly a very committed crowd. Although Little Boots has released only her EP Illuminations in the US, most of the crowd was familiar with all of her material. She rounded off the night with “Stuck on Repeat.”
This sold-out show was surely a sign of success to come for the British performer ahead of the US release of her album Hands.
