Vanaprasta – Color of Sin [MP3]
So many bands come and go, but few start out with a big buzz “You have to see this band.” Vanaprasta is one of these buzz bands that’s been on my radar for the past couple of months. Having just played CMJ, I was finally able to catch them and see what the fuss was all about at The Roxy on Sunset.
Silver Lake must have musical talent in their water, because here is yet another band from the neighborhood. Although Vanaprasta is not hipster indie pop and more raw experimental rock. The quintet of Steven Wilkin (lead vox, keys, great frontman and engages well with the audience), Collin Desha (guitar, keys), Taylor Brown (bass, keys), Cameron Dmytryk (wicked on guitar, likes to jump and climb things) and drummer Ben Smiley has an edge to their music that you don’t hear too often.
On stage, the guys seem like brothers and let loose just enough to have fun and give off good energy. Yet the main focus is the music. Their heavy guitar riffs and pulsating rhythms push things to the next level.
Vanaprasta’s EP Forming the Shapes is such a big tease because we won’t hear their album Healthy Geometry until next year. Another reason to catch them live and/or get their EP, which includes Skinny State and Minnesota.
