Interpol - Specialist
Photos and Words by Debi Del Grande
Still feeling like winter (high of 44 degrees), Interpol played a warm-up show before Coachella at the intimate setting that is the Knitting Factory in Reno, NV. Listening to one of my favorite bands at a tiny venue is always a special treat and the chill wasn’t going to stop me or the rest of the people lined up. The crowd was a mix of people who hadn’t had the pleasure of witnessing the band live before or really hadn’t heard of them at all. I was a little surprised by this. Los Angeles has a huge fan base, so I was intrigued to see how the Reno crowd would react. Would they get into them?
There were slight sound issues at the beginning, but Paul shrugged it off and jammed away.
I had been paying close attention to recent setlists and saw “The Specialist” on the recent ones. But alas, I will have to wait. However, they saved my soul with my absolute fave live Interpol song “The New.” It was solid as usual and to watch both Banks and Kessler rip it up on their guitars takes me to another dimension.
As I watched the faces around me towards the end, I knew everyone was into them and once again, Interpol picked up some new fans along the way.
Special moment: Sam doing some little ditty on “Not Even Jail.”
Overheard from Crowd: “I’m in heaven and I’m not even drunk.”
