Tonight’s episode of The Colbert Report will feature a full acoustic performance of James Taylor’s “Carolina On My Mind,” with Taylor on guitar and both Taylor and Colbert sharing vocal duties.
The performance was likely taped in the fall of 2008 when Taylor visited the show promoting his album of covers and performed Junior Walker’s “(I’m A) Road Runner.” But unlike that song, “Carolina” was never aired, until now.
The special occasion? Colbert is en route to his home state of South Carolina as we speak to join Herman Cain for a joint rally Friday afternoon called “Rock Me Like a Herman Cain!” Colbert recently asked fans to vote for Cain in the South Carolina primary as a symbolic vote for Colbert, because Cain, who dropped out of the presidential race, is still on the ballot, but Colbert was unable to add himself.
