I was the one of the many who were shut out from getting tickets to the Kraftwerk retrospective at the Modern Museum of Art. Much bellyaching followed but the fates (and Volkswagen) had other plans and I was gifted two tickets to Kraftwerk’s performance of Computer World. It was more than worth the hassle and I would be delighted to have Kraftwerk as my robot overlords.
This look back at Kraftwerk’s career didn’t feel like a glorified victory lap. The electronic pioneers have always gotten their share of praise and their influence is undeniable so this was not a way to reap recent rewards. Instead, Kraftwerk gave us an audio and visual experience that was rooted in the past but felt modern and not at all dated.
More of the night including photos and a video after the jump.
Well, not everything could be as timeless as Kraftwerk’s minimalist take on electronic music. The visuals and 3D effects were not awe-inspiring, but I think expecting a cutting edge experience would be missing the point. Kraftwerk built their success on analog signals and the visuals are retro in that sense but still fun. Computer World and the music of Kraftwerk were the focal points of the night and that’s where the MoMa retrospective was a success.
The night once again confirmed what Kraftwerk means to the music world and just how ahead of the times they actually were. The “lesser” songs, from the later albums, would be considered great electronic songs in 2012. It’s also interesting to see how the band has added elements, be it more dancefloor ready beats or pop structure, but maintain the minimal appeal that is Kraftwerk.
As “Musique Non Stop” signaled an end to the night and Ralf H√ľtter took his bow, the Kraftwerk at the museum experience was worthy of a retrospective. Musically impressive and visually entertaining, who else but Kraftwerk could make four guys standing on stage seem like the coolest thing on the planet?
