For a fun Saturday alternative to the CMJ madness, check out this party at Le Bain. I Get Rvng (Dave P’s label/party throwing outfit) and Urban Outfitters are staking a claim at The Standard’s top-floor club for the “Making Time Mission to NYC” on October 22. The best part is that it’s free. (Making Time is the name of Dave P’s recurring Philly party, launched in 2000, and also his radio show launched in 2010.)
On October 22, Twin Shadow play a live set. Expect it to get sweaty quick. Seekae will be on the bill as well, offering some chilled out beats that will surely get the crowd ready. It wouldn’t be a party without resident DJ’s Dave P and Sammy Slice, of course. The Making Time Mission kicks off at 10pm. RSVP to getrad@igetrvng.com.
After CMJ announced its initial Music Marathon lineup with acts like Neon Indian, Wild Flag, Portugal. The Man, J. Mascis, Gang Gang Dance, CSS, The Wombats, Metronomy, Talib Kweli, Zola Jesus, Dum Dum Girls, Davilla 666, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Oberhofer and Free Energy, the 2011 CMJ Music Marathon has announced 900 additional acts set to take over New York from October 18-22.
Some of the notable acts in this announcement include araabMUZIK, Braids, Cerebral Ballzy, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Exitmusic, French Montana, Gauntlet Hair, Hindi Zahra, Islands, Jacuzzi Boys, Kate Miller-Heidke, Lord Huron, Main Attrakionz, Nina Nastasia, Outernational, Parts & Labor, Quilt, Rusted Root, Seekae, Twin Shadow, Unstoppable Death Machines, Vockah Redu, Weekend, Xylos, Young Prisms, and Zambri. Twin Shadow and Rusted Root are the most recognizable names out of the list but Braids, Zambri and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. are all solid additions. Nicholas Thorburn, aka Nick Diamonds, will focus on Islands during CMJ while touring with Mister Heavenly later in the fall.
Go to the CMJ main artist lineup page to get a full list of the 900 acts already scheduled to play CMJ. More bands will be announced in the next few weeks. The film lineup is shaping up nicely as well with Cameron Crowe’s Pearl Jam Twenty playing the fest as well as Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life.
As always head here for all your badge info and check out the informative panels and discussions that will be a part of CMJ.
Hot off the heels of the initial announcement, CMJ has announced its second round of artists set to play the music marathon. Unfortunately, Handsome Furs are not appearing this year but J. Mascis, Gang Gang Dance, Shonen Knife, Cloud Nothings and Free Energy might help ease that pain.
That’s not all folks as Oberhofer, Zomby, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Boy & Bear, Casiokids, Pujol, Smif-N-Wessum and Kendrick Lamar, T. Mills, Joker, Painted Palms, Flatliners, Robbers on High Street, Bag Raiders, Young Buffalo, Skeletonwitch, Gary Clark, Jr. and 1, 2, 3 have also been added to the lineup.
It’s an eclectic mix of artists this round that will pair nicely with the initial round of artists announced. I still feel like CMJ is missing out on another larger act as well as rounding out its roster of exciting new acts. A lot of these acts have been making the rounds and are somewhat known commodities. Don’t panic just yet as there will be plenty of additional artists added to the lineup that will prove me wrong.
The early discount for CMJ badges ends on September 26. Get your tickets here.

Kanye West, GZA and Chromeo played surprise sets in New York last night during Fool’s Gold Records’ third anniversary party at Brooklyn Bowl.
Kanye followed a scheduled DJ set by A-Trak, his former touring DJ who went on to co-found Fool’s Gold.
Earlier in the evening, Kanye premiered his new short film Runaway simultaneously on MTV, MTV.com and BET. He then answered questions for the MTV and MTV.com viewers who sent them in via Twitter.
A day prior, Kanye debuted the latest track in his G.O.O.D Fridays series of free downloads. It’s called “Don’t Look Down” and features Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco and Big Sean.
