Tonight at Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg, expect DJ sets from Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT (as iDEATH), Aaron Pfenning (aka Rewards, a founding member of Chairlift), and Brian Harding of Ex Cops, at the launch of a new monthly party called Slip Inside This House.
The party starts at 11:30 a.m. with tickets available at the door for $5 through 1 a.m., then $10.
For a fun Saturday alternative to the CMJ madness, check out this party at Le Bain. I Get Rvng (Dave P’s label/party throwing outfit) and Urban Outfitters are staking a claim at The Standard’s top-floor club for the “Making Time Mission to NYC” on October 22. The best part is that it’s free. (Making Time is the name of Dave P’s recurring Philly party, launched in 2000, and also his radio show launched in 2010.)
On October 22, Twin Shadow play a live set. Expect it to get sweaty quick. Seekae will be on the bill as well, offering some chilled out beats that will surely get the crowd ready. It wouldn’t be a party without resident DJ’s Dave P and Sammy Slice, of course. The Making Time Mission kicks off at 10pm. RSVP to getrad@igetrvng.com.
Portugal. The Manannounced this afternoon that the band would play live for OccupyMN. Sure enough, shortly before 4 p.m. local time, guitarist John Gourley & bassist Zachary Carothers played an acoustic set for a small crowd gathered at the Hennepin County Government Plaza, aka The People’s Plaza. At least the beginning of the set was captured by OccupyMN’s live stream.
Skip to 17:15 in the first clip, below, to catch the duo greeting the crowd and beginning to play their track “So American.” It continues in the second clip.
That’s where the stream ends, so we’re not sure if the duo played additional songs. Earlier, they said they had planned to play “a few.” We will update this story if any further clips emerge. Please let us know if you find any.
Meanwhile, here’s the studio version of the track, along with the version broadcast last night on Last Call with Carson Daly, where the band also played “Floating.”
French producer Surkin has just offered this preview mix for his forthcoming album, USA. It’s set for a November 7 release on Marble, the label he launched earlier this year with fellow DJs/producers Para One and Bobmo.
Hi. We at Marble are proud to announce that we’ll be releasing the debut full length by Surkin, called USA on November 7th. Originally designed to be out on Institubes, we immediately thought of Marble as the perfect platform to release it after the demise of our former label. It’ll feature 16 tracks, with guest vocals by Detroit’s Ann Saunderson and Chicago’s Kevin Irving (the voice of house blueprint « Move Your Body » by Marshall Jefferson), and two collaborations with longtime friend and labelmate Bobmo, whom with Surkin works as High Powered Boys.
It’s a joyous, juvenile, body-moving record, based on the idea of a radio station called Fireworks FM, set up in Silver Springs. The whole vibe exhales a fantasized eighties soundscape, infused with dance subgenres from that era but dramatically edited by Surkin’s own imaginary memories. Club tracks galore, but also expect more melodic, emotional mid-tempo cuts, but definitely not in a filler way. Mastery all over the place, yet infused with a tremendous feeling of exuberance and freedom. Needless to say it’s an instant classic.
Below, you can stream a few full tracks from USA and view its track list.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York has announced two upcoming performances by the band MGMT. The first performance willl be part of the after-party for the annual Guggenheim International Gala, held at the museum on November 10 in conjunction with a new exhibition, Maurizio Catellan: All. A second MGMT performance at the museum will take place on November 11.
“We’re creating a musical experience that works for the building, and for the construction and presentation of the Cattelan exhibition,” the band wrote. “The art exhibition is done in a completely original way, so it deserves music which is completely original. The Guggenheim performance won’t be a traditional MGMT show, but it will be ____.”
The band offered this video interview, in anticipation of the upcoming events, discussing the upcoming shows and revealing a story about their own history in visual art. After 9/11, while in college, the original MGMT duo produced a sculpture called “Leaf Know Trace,” explained lead vocalist and keyboardist Andrew VanWyngarden. “There was a bush, and we dressed it in masking tape and pears and American flags,” he said. “It caused quite a controversy in the dorm area.”
Presale tickets are on sale for museum members on Thursday, October 13. Public tickets on sale Friday, October 14.
Other favorite bands of TheMusic.FM have also played the main floor of the Guggenheim, within its famous spiral ramp. We’re talking about Julian Plenti, a.k.a. Paul Banks of Interpol (full story here, video below) and Yeasayer (photo above, full story here).
